#5 - Water Shuttle & Relay Pumping

Water shuttle operations and relay pumping are two methods for providing water to emergency scenes in remote areas. This program presents basic information about each type of operation including: a description of a typical water shuttle and the equipment involved, a basic procedure for setting up a water shuttle, a description of a basic relay pumping operation and the process for setting up a typical water relay.

Training objectives:
1. To describe a typical water shuttle and show the equipment involved. The program defines the term “water shuttle” and describes the equipment needed to operate a water shuttle. The terms, “dump site” and “fill site” are defined, and viewers are shown how to select a good dump site and identify good locations for fill sites. The safety considerations when selecting a travel route are presented. Finally, the program shows how to recognize and avoid adverse driving and road conditions.
2. To show basic procedures for setting up a water shuttle. The basic procedures for setting up a water shuttle are shown. These include: how to set up at the fill site for hydrant or draft positioning; setting up hoses between the pumper and the tender at the fill site; and various methods of getting water to the attack pumpers at the dump site.
3. To describe a basic relay pumping operation. The program defines the term “relay pumping” and presents the equipment used in relay pumping.
4. To present the process for setting up a typical water relay. The process for putting a relay operation in place is demonstrated, showing how to set it up; how to maintain an effective relay pumping operation; and then how to correctly shut down a relay pumping operation.
