The driver/operator’s ability to operate a fire pump that provides the necessary water supply while maintaining the mechanical soundness of the pump is critical to the success of the operation. This program shows: how to operate the pump using water on the apparatus, how to operate the pump using an external pressurized water supply and how to operate the pump using water from a draft source.

Training Objectives:
1. To show how to operate the pump using the water on the apparatus. This program presents pump operations for different types of fire pumps, including front-mounted, Power Take Off (PTO), and midship-mounted pumps. The viewer will see how to put each type of pump into gear, then into operation, and then how to disengage the pump and shut down. The Driver/Operator trainee will see how to put the pump into operation when using water on the apparatus, including how and when to use the pump primer, how to read gauge settings, and what to do when the tank water starts to run out before the fire attack is completed.
2. To demonstrate how to operate the pump using an external pressurized water supply. When the tank water supply becomes low the Driver/Operator must know how to make a smooth transition to an external water source without disrupting fire flow. The program shows how to make the transition to a hydrant hook-up including a detailed explanation of “cavitation” and what causes cavitation and how it can be avoided. The procedure for operating a pumper from a hydrant is demonstrated as well as the steps for shutting down the pump after hydrant operations.

Driver/Operators in both rural and urban fire departments need to know how to draft water from a static source in the event of a water supply emergency. The program shows how to set up for drafting operations and how to operate the pump at draft. It shows the steps for shutting down and cleaning up after drafting water from a natural water source.
