New NFPA 1970 Standard Combines Four Existing Standards into One
Oct 21st 2025
As part of the Emergency Response and Responder Safety Document Consolidation Plan as approved and amended by the NFPA Standards Council, NFPA 1970 is a combination of Standards NFPA 1971, NFPA 1975, NFPA 1981, and NFPA 1982.
Below are the four standards that have been combined into NFPA 1970: Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural and Proximity Firefighting, Work Apparel, Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services, and Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS).
Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting. Products meeting NFPA 1971 include specific Globe turnouts, Globe hoods, Globe structural firefighting boots, PGI hoods, FireCraft firefighter gloves, and Cairns fire helmets.
Standard on Emergency Services Work Apparel. Products meeting NFPA 1975 include certain shirts, jackets, pants and station wear from both Workrite and CrewBoss.
Standard on Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services. Products meeting NFPA 1981 include specific configurations of the MSA G1 SCBA.
Standard on Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS). Certain MSA G1 SCBA product combinations meet NFPA 1982.
As manufacturers complete the certification process of their products to the new NFPA 1970 standard, they will begin to ship with labels indicating NFPA 1970 instead of the prior, separate standards focused on structural firefighting, proximity fire fighting, SCBA and PASS devices.
