Patriot Day: Honoring Fallen Firefighters

Patriot Day: Honoring Fallen Firefighters

Sep 11th 2023

While the terrible events of September 11th happened 22 years ago, the entire country still feels the weight of the terrorist attack. On that day, 343 New York firefighters lost their lives while braving the disaster and rescuing survivors. At the cost of their own lives, these brave souls and many others went up against the dangers of collapsing buildings to save civilians.

With such an example of bravery, many future firefighters found their calling as they witnessed just what a firefighter can do in the face of tragedy. Perhaps even you were inspired by the mighty courage shown by firefighters on the day of the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

As a firefighter, you understand what it takes to put your life on the line so that others may survive. Your family and friends can see in your demeanor how heavily these decisions can weigh on you, but it may not be easy for them to understand or consider the true scope of what it means to throw on turnout gear and walk into the flames.

That’s why Patriot Day is so important. By looking back and remembering those firefighters who lost their lives, American citizens can look at the present and future with confidence in the men and women beneath the gear.

At Curtis - Tools for Heroes, we honor the courage and tenacity of those firefighters who lost their lives while saving others on September 11, 2001.

How Can I Pay My Respects on Patriot Day?

You can participate in honoring the fallen by flying your American flag at half-mast and observing a moment of silence at 8:46 AM Eastern, the time at which the first tower was struck.
